Does Altruism Exist?
What is altruism? Altruism is the belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others. Now let’s get on to the story…
One early morning I was going to see my grandma at the elderly’s. I haven’t seen her in such a long time. She called me and have said she wanted me to come see her. Before I went I had to go to work. After work I headed over to see her. When I walked in the building there were a lot of elderly’s. It looked like they needed help. The workers were doing nothing but sitting. I felt bad for them. I wish I could’ve helped but I had to work again at 5:00. It was only 3:45, so I got to spend time with my grandma for a while. I asked the lady sitting in the front if she knew where my noni was. Before I could finish talking she came behind me in her wheelchair. I hugged her so tight. While I was hugging her I saw everyone else looking at me hugging my grandma. They wished they had someone like me to hug them. I asked my noni if they ever had someone like me to hug them.
She said, ‘’No, they never felt a nice warm hug in a long time’’.
I have asked her if I could help them in till 10:00.
‘’don’t you have work at 5:00’’?
‘’yes but I want to stay and help these people that don’t feel happy with their life’’.
‘’Ok you can stay’’.
‘’Thank you noni’’.
The first thing I did was go over to my grandma’s friends and played bingo with them. They were all excited that I came. We played so much games we all got so hungry at that time. So I went to the lunch room and grabbed some food for all of us. My noni told me before that old people like desert, so I kept that in mind. When I came out of the cafeteria I gave them their lunch then went back in the lunch room. I made the best cheese cake ever. It had the best mellow taste ever. I went out and told everyone I made cheese cakes that my noni taught me. They all said it was delicious. I was happy that I made other people feel that way. When everyone was done eating we all sat down around the fire place and told each other story’s when we were little. I was proud of myself for helping other people. Even if I didn’t go to work it was better helping other people even if they didn’t return the favor. When I went back to work the other day I was surprised. All the elderly’s I worked with yesterday were all there. They through me a thank you party. They all thanked me for helping them for everything. They told me they learned that there’s always someone always there for you. So altruism is true.
