Week 1 Day 1 (Monday)
1) What did you read about today? Be specific.
1) The book is taken place in Indiana. Ms. Bell, Amy's teacher just heard that Amy died. Ms. Bell was really shocked knowing such a beautiful girl died at such a young age. Ms. Bell also had Amy's sister, Danielle, in class. Danielle was a very good and neat student. She was always prepared and happy. Danielle's parents, Gloria and Gray Shipley, would sometimes not send Danielle to class saying they had problems with her at home. Gray was a doctor and Gloria was a nurse. After a while Ms. Bell started noticing signs of abuse. Danielle had an abrasion and some bruises on her arm which lead Ms. Bell to suspicion. She started contacting the Welfare Department and other cases sending files on possible abuse of Danielle. Days passed and Ms. Bell didn't receive anything which made her worried. Then finally one day she got a mail saying that the department didn't receive the files and found nothing that could be contacted with abuse. Ms. Bell talked to Barbara, a 1st grade teacher who worked with her, asking her about the reports since her husband worked and the department. She had notified her husband and he soon got the pictures. Ms. Bell had finished her teachings early and decided on going on a vacation but she than received a call referring to Danielle's abuse case. When she got there they had discussed that they found no abuse about Danielle and thought nothing of the pictures. Ms. Bell felt really hopeless and extremely sad knowing what Danielle was going through and no one being able to believe or even help a poor little girl.
2) How do you feel about what you read today?
2) I felt sad. I wanted the Welfare Department to take her in and believe what Danielle was going through. I knew Ms. Bell was correct and there were clear evidence to support her being abused but clearly they didn't notice which was an odd thing to be.
3) Think about your favorite character. What happened to him/her today?
3) My favorite character, Ms. Bell, went through a lot of difficulties trying to help save someone's life.No one believed Ms. Bell when she expressed her thoughts and showed the evidence.
4) How would you feel if the same thing that happened to him/her, happened to you?
4) I would feel sad and alone if I was trying to help someone in need and no one would believe me, even though I had clear evidence to support my thoughts as a back up. I would't like if someone treated me this way because I know others don't want to be treated this way and that it would just not be a fair thing to just deny me like that when I did nothing wrong. I would at least ask for a explanation on why I am being treated this way.
5) What questions do you have about what you read today?
5) I really want to know if what Danielle told Ms. Bell is actually all true or just a lie. I also want to know why they denied Ms. Bell's thoughts and files.
6) What do you predict will happen next in this story?
6) I think the department will take Danielle in to ask her questions and examine if there is any evidence of possible abuse.
