Week 1 Day 2 (Tuesday)
1) What did you read about today? Be specific..
1) Nancy, the Shipleys neighbor, had a good friend whose daughter babysat for the Shipleys she had told Carolyn, a friend of Ms. Bell, and Carolyn told Ms. Bell that the Shipleys were an odd couple and that when the girl babysat the Shipleys told her to keep her locked in her room and to not let her steal food. Ms. Bell was scared and she knew what that meant. If Danielle needed to steal food that meant she wasn't getting enough food and her parents were starving her. Carolyn was also the same woman who had told Ms. Bell about Amy's death. Carolyn had never met the Shipleys but she still cared about the daughters and feared about them. Ms. Bell kept wondering how Danielle felt about all of this. She made an appointment with Terri to talk to her more about the Shipleys. The judge had told Ms. Bell that they are canceling the files on Danielle because they had no new evidence but that Danielle's father was going to put her in a children's psychiatric center. Ms. Bell was happy that at least Danielle would get some time away from her abusive parents. Ms. Bell was watching tv with her son Brent and was wishing that Amy's death wasn't real however it came up on the news that Amy had died. Amy's death was caused by malnutrition, huger, and dehydration. Ms. Bell didn't care how late it was she had to notify the Crown Point Department that she knew about the Shipleys past and she wanted to help. Ms. Bell went to bed that night crying and feeling awful that such a beautiful girl would die so early. The Shipleys had gotten arrested for the death of Amy. Ms. Bell had notified Debbie, a woman who was friends with Ms. Bell. Debbie didn't know as much so she went to Lake County authorities. There they had told her everything about the Shipleys and she was shocked by everything. Gray Shipley, the father, also had his medical license suspended. After Debbie went home she wanted to know more so she started investigating more. His childhood was a normal childhood. He had gotten married with Rhonda and Glaria worked as a house worker at their house. They had 3 kids and soon Gray wanted to divorce Rhonda. They got divorced and they agreed for him to keep the kids. Soon Gloria and Gray got married and now they are living together. Grau's life started getting harder and he got kicked out of a lot of places and had to owe a large amount of money because of child abuse. He also had to move from place to place because of this case going on. When Gray returned home after a while he saw an ambulance taking his lifeless child away. She was full of bruises and was so skinny. Her death started appearing on the news and articles and another investigation had started. A meeting was held in court and Ms. Bell, Debbie, and a few others were counted as witnesses. Christmas started coming around however no one forgot about Amy and everyone was praying for her. Ms. Bell felt like she was in a semicoma after going through all of this. Danielle was old enough so they asked her questions. What Danielle said was awful. Her eyes were full of tears as she expressed her opinions and all that had been happening. Her testimony had rocked the state of Indiana with horror. The Shipleys had then to stay in jail until the bond of their trial.
2) How do you feel about what you read today?
2) I read a lot today and I just feel so awful. I think that no one should have to go through things such as Danielle and Amy had too. I feel so happy that there are at least some people out there that actually cared about Danielle and Amy and wanted to be a part of it to get them to a place they would be happy and safe at.
3) Think about your favorite character. What happened to him/her today?
3) My favorite character, Ms. Bell, had to do a lot of traveling and a lot of meetings to attend. She had to be brave and prepared for what she was going to say in court. She stayed up all night and day to strive to help Danielle and Amy. She was really frustrated and tired but she didn't let anything get to her.
4) How would you feel if the same thing that happened to him/her, happened to you?
4) I know I would be really tired and in need of help if I were going through something like Ms. Bell.
5) What questions do you have about what you read today?
5) I want to know why Gray and Gloria weren't put in jail for the first child allegations.
6) What do you predict will happen next in this story?
6) I think everyone will go back to court and solve the trial and decided where to keep Amy, Daniella, and Krista.
