Week 1 Day 3 (Wednesday)
1) What did you read about today? Be specific.
1) Debbie wanted to cover the trial but she had reservations on something else. Debbie didn't want to make the journey alone so she wanted her mom to join. She teased her in telling her it would be great and luxurious and her mom decided to go since she was on summer vacation. Debbie was scared because she had been to Lake County only one time. When she got there the Shipleys looked very different and proper. The testimony continued. Everyone stated their opinions. Some described Amy's bruises and how bad they were, her eyes were sunken, her ankles swollen, and etc. The evidence of Amy death was from black pepper. Her parents stuffed her with black pepper the night before and since she was so weak and bruised she had died. She had inhaled vomit into her lungs and had died from it. The kids, instead of toothbrush and toothpaste, had to use cleaning supplies and dish washing soap. Amy would always want food because she never got enough food. Doctors had examined Amy and she had inhaled her stomach contents which was not normal for a five year old so the doctor knew that she had been malnourished and had family problems at home. Gloria and Gray would urinate on Amy and Danielle and Amy would urinate on herself too. Another person explained how she went through sexual abuse when she was younger. Another had written a book on abuse and a possibility of murder. Danielle's therapist was also there to say her part. Danielle later came in too to speak explaining the house rules and what would happen if someone break them. They made Amy take a shower in cold water with ice. They would put delicious food out so she could look at them when she is hungry and then they would hit her with a belt if she dared touch the food. The other judge that was against them explained that they were just disciplining their kids and it was not counted as abuse and that there were no intend of killing Amy. Someone backed up saying feeding her spoonful of black pepper, hitting her for hours, and making her sleep on the cold floor can cause her to die and so that meant it was done intentionally. After all this Ms. Bell spent some time with Danielle since she hadn't seen her in forever. There was this line that Ms. Bell really loved which was, "Danielle would eat wallpaper just to survive." Ms. Bell's hopes got high for Danielle and her strive to survive. Ms. Bell was really excited to go home and share everything with her friends.
2) How do you feel about what you read today?
2) I feel happy and sad. I want Amy's case to be over and her sister to live a happy life. I don't want what happened to Amy happen to Danielle too.
3) Think about your favorite character. What happened to him/her today?
3) My favorite character, Ms. Bell, had to continue the testimony at the court and she was very exhausted and she just wanted the best for Danielle since Amy has nothing left anymore. She was happy that she met Danielle and had time to talk to her. She was excited to tell all her friends what had been going on.
4) How would you feel if the same thing that happened to him/her, happened to you?
4) If I had to go to court to support something I would be very tired and would want to get done with it as quick as possible. I would be really happy to see and talk to someone I haven't seen in forever. I would be excited and would love to share my experiences with my close friends.
5) What questions do you have about what you read today?
5) I want to know when the testimony will be over.
6) What do you predict will happen next in this story?
6) I think the testimony will start to come to the end and Ms. Bell would win and Gloria and Gray will go to jail..
