Week 4 Day 1 (Monday)
1) What did you read about today? Be specific.
1) Richard found out that his mom had been raised Mormon. She was ashamed of the lifestyle she lived now. Richard had said that his mom was a drunk alcoholic who was mad and confused about her life just the way he was and that there was not much difference between the two of them. She told Richard about the years of genealogy she had completed. He was really dumbfounded on what she told him. Richard found out that alcohol was what had destroyed her ability to believe in herself and help the ones she loved. Richard knew his life was headed in the same way. To make sure his mom's stories were real he went to his gram's over the holiday and asked her questions. He eventually found out everything said was true. Richard wanted revenge on his mother's abuse. All Richard liked doing was getting high. He wanted to get further apart from his family, his mom, his brothers, and himself. He mixed cane and heroin with DXM pills into a bag and stuffed as much as he could in the pipe. He was so sick and his stomach hurt intensely. He found out the solution he didn't need the gun to kill him self he needed the drugs. His brother and mother had yelled at him and he had had enough. He went upstairs and thought about going over the edge. He mixed cocaine and heroin together to dose himself. He wondered what the police and everyone else thought of him if he used the gun to shoot himself after the drug usage. When he took it he knew he went over the edge. His shirt was full of blood and he had hit his head on the cement wall. A police had came up to him and taken him in. He knew he was going to be in great trouble. As soon as they got to the station the lady cleaned up Richard's blood from his forehead. He thought of leaving that mad house for good once again. He was then transferred into this other house which was runned by a couple. He was assigned to stay there until his mother came and knew of what was going on. Richard wanted to leave the house and stay here forever or somehow go to another foster care, anywhere away from his wild mother. He meet a girl and hung out with her the whole time. He spent a few days there and every day was the same schedule. Her mom was invited to the meeting so the people could talk to her. His mother told them that she didn't want Richard and that they could take him wherever they wanted. Richard was happy to gain freedom but terrified by the thought of his mother hitting his other brothers too, especially Keith. He was to be taken to the Salt Lake City Youth Development Enterprises. He went to visit the people he was going to leave. He thought, John and Darlene couldn't understand what his life was like in California and they couldn't imagine what it is like now. How were they supposed to understand?
2) How do you feel about what you read today?
2) I read a lot today and I felt so happy that the police found him and now he could actually be rescued and taken to a place where he would be treated like a human. I am sad though, because he still has that horrific image of how his life is and how he was abused.
3) Think about your favorite character. What happened to him/her today?
3) My favorite character, Richard, went over the line with his drugs and because of that he was saved. A police officer found him and took him to the foster care center.
4) How would you feel if the same thing that happened to him/her, happened to you?
4) I know if I took all those drugs at the same time that I would be in a lot of pain, but if I was saved from abuse I would be so happy knowing that now, somehow, I could restart my life to a life that is normal.
5) What questions do you have about what you read today?
5) I want to know if he makes it into YDE.
6) What do you predict will happen next in this story?
6) I think he will make it into the YDE and will be given proper clothes, shelter, and food.
